Hey, a longer article from me and this article is about one of my top favourite things: Carrying around useless stuff
At first I gotta catch my camera and make some pictures of the most common items I carry around all the day. First a mission statement:
- I usualy carry around some stuff
- I don’t care about guys who carry around nothing and say I’m an idiot because I want to be McGuyver
- I can see the difference between beeing inspector gadget and knowing what I use often.
- As a firefighter and a nurse, you carry around a lot of shit by nature
At first you have to say I don’t carry around all the stuff on my entire life. It depends on my place of beeing. Of course you carry around more shit on a camping vacation than in the city while drinking with your mates. But you can see by the description of the items how often I carry them. I have a stylo DA-KINE shoulder bag which has much space for most of the shit I carry around. In my actual pockets are not so many things but as I mentioned before it depends on the situation.
So this is the whole mess

Looks much but as I said before I don’t carry around all the time.
I want to point out my favourite items
THE LIGHTNING DEPARTMENT

The first question is: Why should I carry around a light? We are living in a modern society and there are lights on the streets ?
Well, my opinion about this is simple, if you loose your keys or want to fix a small thing at your car or if you want to distract your drunken bar enemy, you’ll need a light…it is always a good thing to carry around a small light on your keychain or in the pocket of your anorak.
As you can see I’m a huge fan of LED Lights. But let’s go from left to right
1. The black dildo is my fancy LED Lenser…it is very bright and can be operated with one AA Battery. The light is so bright that it can actualy replace a BIG Mag Lite at night and also has some hours of operation with one batterie. And the funniest thing is: It costs around 10€ at the local Media Markt. The only disadvantage here is the sneaky design, if you lose this thing in the middle of the night it’s very hard to find it.
2. You can see a packet of matches and a lighter. I’m not a smoker but can you remember the one moment where a hot chick in the club asked you about fire for her cigarette and all you had was “I’m not smoking!” Use the lighter or the matches!!!! Then a lighter can be very effective for bottle opening or for Jason Bourne terr0r - activities during the marriage of your uncle. If you need to make some attention just set a pack of matches on fire and throw it on the ground (e.g. in a restaurant). Humans are afraid of fire and will get panic and the attention will be focused on this little spot.
3. This is a UK4AA LED Light. I’m not quite confident with this light because my LED Lenser (the left one) beats this thing in everything starting from the costs (The UK4AA LED costs around 50€) to the light efficency. I’m not carrying around this big thing anymore I have it as a light in my car or during assignments at the Fire department.
4. My keychain LED Lenser (4,99€) is the lil’ bro of the big led lenser and is very cool. At least it has much light-power and is operated by some small batteries. It is very useful for finding your keyhole or finding out the hospital if a moron just put out the light but this isn’t the best thing: You can use it as a main light like my big lensers. The light is bright enough to show you the path to anything, so if you need a good light in an chaos or emergency situation disconnect the lenser from your keychain.
Some basic thoughts about lights:
1) Forget about MagLite….these lamps are overprized, sellouts and have worse quality. They are telling everybody that their light is used my law enforcement and emergency services but this isn’t true. Mag Lite has a shitty quality and eats up batteries !
2) If you ask me about the light colour of the lenser, I would prefer white/blue or red. Green is not good because your eye is irritated and distracted by green light. Red light doesn’t affect the nightvision ability of your eyes (If you are out in the dark for about 20minutes, your eyes have acclimatized to the dark…one shine of white light makes the whole effect worse and even disappear for at least 5 minutes) Red light has the advantage that it doesn’t affect this, it is better visible over distances but the light quality is worse than white light. I use white/blue mixed tone light, because if you just look in the light of a car that is coming on the road, you’ll loose your nightvision for a short time.
CUTLERY

1. On of my bandage/hospital-scissors (2-3€) is always in one of my pockets in the hospital. There are several reasons for this, the strongest one is: In case of CPR we don’t peel sick and heavy people out of their clothes, we cut them apart in the middle of the thorax and have good access. Also for restrained people it is useful to disconnect the restrains within seconds in case of emergency. Then there are much simpler reasons for cutting bandages or plasters…cutting meal-plans…blabla. I usualy don’t carry them around in my pockets in my private live but sometimes I forget them in my pockets. These scissors cut like shit through everything, but forget about the aluminum scissors in your Car First-Aid-Kit, they suck. Go to ebay and spend the 3€ on these scissors. They also serve well as bottle-openers or punch-aids for more violent situations. If you want to take it further you can also take Trauma/EMT Scissors. These things are desinged for cutting of clothes or cutting through shoes or ropes, but they are very bulky and strong (They have to be!) and they are so big that you need a holster on your belt.
2. My small (terr0r) knife (about 3cm blade) which was almost responsible for an arrest and confinement at Weze Intl. Airport. It was very cheap (2€ at military shop or something) and it is not very sharp. You can use it well for everyday cutting like packages, gaffa tape or just opening something. It is very durable and a big help if you don’t have something for cutting your bread;)
3. My big knife which was expensive (Around 40€) but it is worth it! The best thing is, that the handle is made of ABS (Acrylonitrile butadiene styrene) and almost impossible to destroy, and also it is FUCKING sharp. You can cut many things with it but it is very dangerous if you don’t know what you are doing with the knife. I carry this knife around any places where I work or in some cases where I think I need to cut something (During Tenelsen Reharshals for example). But it is not always on my side.
My the choice of knife there isn’t any ideal. Even in price, I had 15€ Knife for about 3 years and it worked very well.
And here is something for the violence-smellers around us:
Knifes are dangerous, you can hurt people and in the possible worst case even kill them with them. I don’t carry around knifes for protection from people who may hurt me. But we come to this later during the self defense/ninja part of my blog.
Keychains

Keychains are important and you can put a lot of useless shit on your keychain for example cuddly toys. I prefer the things that can be useful.
First of all, on my car-keychain there is a little bag where you can out the key in so that you have a little bag with your carkeys. I always carry around a pair of latex-examination-gloves with me. Because I’m a nurse/firefighter/EMT I know the dangers of infecton and I know that it is easier to loose the distance between you and the patient if you have gloves on. It’s a psychological thing even for pros like me.
And I’m in first aid-situations very often, and I you don’t got any gloves with you it is kind of shitty because your hands are spilled with infectious fluids.
The next thing (the yellow aparatus) is the RES-Q-ME
This video shows clearly what the ResQme can do, please ignore the korean signs and take a look on the pictures.
It was a commercial gift once, and I tried it out in practice on wasted cars. The thing is amazing for helping others and helping yourself AND it’s capable for opening letters and cutting bandages from a package. It will run through anything and also your belt. It costs around 12€ which I wouldn’t have spent but it is good.
And all the heroes among us who think you can smash a window in your car with your ellbow: Forget it! You will hurt your ellbow very bad and the glass will win the situation. And don’t try out the windshield, it is very very very hard!
The next thing is a standard 1GB USB Key, but it is a seperate keyring with a key for tuning drums…not very special.
Clothing
What you can see here are two BUFF Headwear kerchiefs, these things are amazing and worth the money, they cost around 10-25€ and I have two types of Buffs
The first thing is a normal/classic buff and the black one is a polar buff for the winter,it’s excellent which I can show you on the following videos.

Self Defense/Jason Bourne-Ninja

You can see Pepper Spray here, first some basic thoughts about my opinion on self defense:
1. Self Defense means hurting people, any other view that there is a clean way of self defense is made up by people who don’t know anything about human confrontations.
2. There are situations where defending is ego-masturbating, but there are situaions where defending will safe you from some time in hospital and weeks in fear and in the worst case from death or serious injury.
3. Some guy who wants to punch you because you looked at his ex-girlfriends ass is no situation to defend, it is a situationen to back off and tell the twat to fuck off, punching each other in such cases is stupid.
4. I’m personaly against any weapons for private people and I’m against violence by nature.
5. Using weapons like expanded batons, tonfas or pepper spray, maybe knifes is a double edged sword. There is a 50% chance for winning and a 50% chance for losing. For the law-enforcement it’s always a bad sign if you used these weapons because it shows that you are ready to fight. (Which is a pack of bullshit).
Pepper Spray is worse! I had some pepper spray agents in my face and it was horrible and it will send even the most drunk person down to earth. There are four basic “sprays”
a) Beam-Type: It’s is a straight beam of pepper spray coming out of the can. It has a long operating distance (3-5m) and isn’t affected by wind or envoirement. You can target a person very clearly and it won’t affect other people so bad.
b) Fog Type: The pepper spray comes out in a ray of fog and spreads very wide. The operating distance is short (1-2m) but with one can you can kick out several oponents to groups if you do it right. You don’t have to aim but there is a higher chance that it will affect you and other people.
c) Pepper Foam: Very sticky and vision-blocking foam that has a middle-range operating distance (2m) and blocks the vision of the opponent
d) Pepper-Gel: It’s a sticky gel that is mixed with colours and will colour your opponent for quite some time. It is not as aggressive as pepper spray but has it’s effect, but you need a good aiming ability which is very hard under stress.
So it’s your choice, In real life this spray can safe yourself especialy if you are a women. Some basic tips for using it:
- Do not aim for the face! Aim for the Neck or Upper Chest because it’s easier to hit it
- Do not put your pepper spray out and treat your enemy by saying “I’m using this know!” because you lost your surprise effect. Warn him one time, warn him the second time by saying fuck off, but if he comes closer to you fuck him off
- Depending on the situation don’t stop spraying and connect this with a firm kick in somewhere.’
- Run like hell, don’t help him he won’t help you if you’d lie there and dissapear in the shadows!
My opinion to expandable batons and tonfas: Be careful, be skilled. IF you never know how to use this thing you will get boned and then NEVER aim for the head !
Knife as a self defense weapon is very cruel, brutal and has massive effects on your counterpart. But it’s your life and he wants to hurt you. Normaly I’m a very reflective person and I don’t like stereotypes or easy thoughts on criminalism. But there are times, where you have to forget about this and save your fucking life or health. Think for yourself
This was me, I hope you like this article and give some comments
